Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
- 4 slices American cheese
- 4 burger buns
- 4 large portobello mushrooms
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Oil for frying
- Lettuce and tomato for topping
Instructions
- Preheat your frying oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C).
- In a bowl, soak the portobello mushrooms in buttermilk for 15 minutes.
- In another bowl, coat the soaked mushrooms with breadcrumbs, pressing them in to adhere.
- Fry the breaded mushrooms in hot oil until golden brown, about 4-5 minutes. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- Form the ground beef into 4 patties, season with salt and pepper, and grill or pan-fry over medium-high heat for about 3-4 minutes on each side.
- In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of American cheese on each patty to melt.
- Assemble the burgers by placing a cheeseburger patty on the bottom bun, topping with a fried mushroom, lettuce, and tomato. Add the top bun and enjoy!
