Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F)
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 packet active dry yeast (2 ¼ teaspoons)
- 1 tablespoon barley malt syrup (optional, for boiling)
- Cornmeal (for dusting)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture.
- Mix until a dough forms, then knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add barley malt syrup if using.
- Divide the dough into 6 pieces. Shape each piece into a bagel by poking a hole in the center and stretching it out.
- Boil the bagels, 2-3 at a time, for about 1 minute on each side. Remove and let drain on a wire rack.
- Place the bagels on a baking sheet dusted with cornmeal and bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
- Let them cool before slicing and serving.
